The sanitarium Lemaire is not an isolated case. Because modernistic buildings were often constructed using state of the art construction techniques such as a concrete skeleton, huge glass surfaces, stucco facades or – as in the case of the sanitarium – ceramic tiles they are often very vulnerable which makes a renovation respecting the authentic character most of the time priceless.
Sanitarium Zonnestraal in Hilversum (the Netherlands) which was more or less built at the same time, has faced the same problems. After years of decay and vacancy the renovation of the first building started in 1998. Nine years later the renovation of the last building is going to start
